Structure Fire - La Grange Fire District - Lauer Rd : The La Grange Fire Department was assisted by the Arlington, Beekman, East Fishkill, Pleasant Valley, and Union Vale Fire Departments at this structure fire on Lauer Rd on January 10, 2010. A DCSO deputy arrived on the scene within several minutes and advised DC911 that the structure was fully involved. I arrived some ten minutes later and the roof had already collapsed. A delayed FD notification gave the fire significant headway and left firefighters with no chance of saving the structure.

Structure Fire - 50 Innsbruck Blvd - East Fishkill FD, Village of Fishkill FD, Beekman FD, and EFPD. : During the early morning hours of December 30, 2008, the East Fishkill Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at #50 Innsbruck Drive in the Little Switzerland development off Rte 82 in the Town of East Fishkill. Upon their arrival, they had fire venting from the roof of a large two story tudor style residence. Additional alarms were transmitted that brought in additional equipment as well as a FAST team from the Village of Fishkill FD. As crews stretched numerous lines to the second floor of the residence, a porta-tank operation was established to supply water to the scene as this area does not have a municipal water system. The fire was agressively taking control of the attic as crews worked diligently to stop it by pulling the ceilings and hitting the fire from below. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading from the attic and clearly saved the residence and its contents from imminent destruction. East Fishkill was assited at the scene by the Village of Fishkill and Beekman Fire Departments and the New Hackensack Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident.

New Hackensack FD benefit ride and car show to benefit Lauren DiMase : When Lauren DiMase, daughter of New Hackensack Fire Chief Rocco DiMase, was 6 years old she was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She then spent the next couple years of her childhood fighting for survival. Eventually Lauren won this battle against leukemia and the focus was now to merely live the life of a normal child. Ten years later, January of 2008 Lauren Dimase relapsed and is now reliving the nightmare of her past all over again. She is currently a patient at Westchester Medical Center and will be spending the next 27 months receiving chemotherapy infusions. This is just the start of her road to recovery.

Large Woods Fire - Sharpe Reservation - Rombout Fire District - 11/12-11/13/09 : The first photo in the gallery is a Hi-Def video of our recon mission........ Click on the arrow to play the video....... These are photo's of a large woods fire that occurred in the Rombout Fire District in Dutchess County N.Y. on the Sharpe Reservation which consists of 2,300 acres of mountainous, heavily wooded land used as a Fresh Air Fund Camp for inner-city kids. The fire was initially reported late Thursday afternoon and it was dark by the time firefighters were able to first reach the fire and all attempts at extinguishment were put off until 8:00 am on Friday when prearranged crews would return to the site...... I had no intention of going to this incident but instead decided to go to the command post and take a few shots of the operation from there...... I hung around for a while and then a local Cable News Crew showed up and decided that they were going to hike into the fire......Now I had no choice but to do the same.... :( Firefighters had the bulk of the fire knocked down before I decided to take the hike so I missed the "better" photo's. The fire was located in a remote area of land that was only accessible by foot and with some difficulty you could get in with a quad or ATV...... The terrain was very rough and the ground was covered with small jagged rocks which protruded from the ground and were covered by the leaves. This made walking a very treacherous task...... Many Firefighters hiked in by foot while others drove quads or 6x6's atv's loaded with saws,rakes,brooms,leaf blowers,Indian tanks, and small quantities of water...... This was a difficult fire to fight because of the rugged terrain and the sporadic strong gusts of wind that spread the fire..... It was difficult to judge the size of the fire as well as the progress being made due to the fact that there was no place to get an over-all view of the fire area. The perimeters were walked but the fire had several fingers that occurred from the wind blown embers and no one could say for sure if the entire fire area was covered. It was decided to see if an aircraft from the nearby Dutchess County Airport would be willing to fly over the fire and give an assessment of the fire from above...... There were no aircraft available at which point a request was made for assistance from the New York State Police Aviation Unit. They agreed to assist and a helicopter from their base at Stewart Airport met myself and another individual who were elected to go on a reconnaissance mission aboard NYSP's 1H-20. The plan was to get photos from above which I would make 13x19 prints of that IC could use as a visual reference to coordinate the firefight...... Coming from someone who saw the fire from the ground and above, I can tell you that the view from the air did not give you any feeling for how rough the terrain was that firefighters were faced with...... From above it really didn't look that bad...... But I assure you, firefighters had their hands full below........ The original weather forecast was for rain and everybody was hoping for the same. A check by IC with NOAA - Albany earlier in the morning claimed that the rain originally forecasted for the area, was now going to stay south and that it was unlikely we would see any rain....... As we arrived above the fire in 1H-20, we could see that firefighters had made great strides in the efforts to extinguish the fire and that any problem areas were already being addressed by ground crews and the perimeter did in-fact encompass the entire fire........ We radioed back our observations to Rombout command and our job from above was now complete..... And as we headed back, a light rain began to fall....... The fire was placed under control within several hours and all units were removed from the mountain at which time the NYS Forrest Rangers took control of the fire..... 24 departments from Dutchess,Putnam, Orange, and Ulster Counties assisted the Rombout Fire Department in extinguishing the fire.....

Aircraft Emergencies - Dutchess County Airport - New Hackensack Fire District - From my archives - Occurred in 1985. The first incident involved a vintage WWII B-17 Bomber named "Texas Raiders" and the second a Gulf Stream II jet. : These are photos of two aircraft emergencies that occurred at the Dutchess County Airport in 1985. The first involved a vintage WWII B-17 Bomber named "Texas Raiders" and is one of just a handful of flyable WW II Flying Fortress Bombers remaining in the world today. The aircraft stopped at DC Airport for refueling and it's brakes failed when it went to stop and it ran off the end of the runway. Fortunately it did not go completely off the end of the runway which abruptly drops off to Jackson Rd which is some 100 feet below...... You can find out about this aircraft at this link: http://www.gulfcoastwing.org/GCW/index.htm If you are interested in aircraft or WWII history, it's an interesting read. If you go through the photo's on the site you will see that the tail number of this aircraft matches the number on all of the photo's......Apparently the aircraft has undergone a major restoration since this incident and I would hope they included the braking system in their to-do-list.......... :-) The second incident involved an IBM Gulf stream II Jet. Apparently the jet had a potential landing gear problem (Faulty gear down indicator?) and the pilot declared an emergency. IBM maintained their corporate fleet of aircraft - both fixed and rotational winged at the airport until the mid 90's I believe when the entire operation was moved to the Westchester County Airport where it remains today.

Structure Fire - Chelsea Fire District - Rte 9D north of Dutchess Stadium - From my archives : A flash from the past.....These photos are from an arson fire that occurred in the Chelsea Fire District at a restaurant called the Magnolia Restaurant Bar & Grill (formerly Uncle Chu's) at 3:10AM on Thursday August 19, 1999 and was located on Rte 9D - north of Dutchess Stadium. They are scans from Kodak Gold 400 color film. I heard the alarm and decided on a whim to go take photos. I had my camera, one roll of film, a flash with batteries of unknown condition, and my determination and I headed out the door...... I guess that these are significant to me because after not actively photographing fires for approximately 10 years (While I was a Chief Officer) , these photos marked my gradual return.....Anyway, the batteries in the flash died, I ran out of film, and the building burned to the ground despite the efforts of Firefighters and I'm back photographing fires...... Thanks to DJ Farrell from Glenham FD for the details.

9-11-2008 "Towers of Light" Tribute photo's : This September 11 marked the seventh anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Structure Fire - Pawling Fire District - 660 Old Quaker Hill Rd. - 3/7/09 : Fire destroys a large multi-million dollar estate in Pawling. Photo's of a structure fire that occurred on March 7, 2009 in Pawling N.Y. The structure was a 9000 sq. ft. 2 1/2 story mansion that was built out of a former barn. The structure which was ~ 200 ft. wide by 50 ft. deep was equipped with a residential fire sprinkler system that was operational at the time of the fire. The structure had a thatched roof (As in hay) which ultimately led to the destruction of the building when an apparent chimney fire spread to the same. Firefighters attempted to use roof saws to vent the roof and cut around the fire but were unable to do so when the hay became jammed in their saw blades making them inoperable. Once the fire burned underneath the thatched roof and above the residential fire sprinkler system, it began to take control of the building and eventually destroying same. The house reportedly contained millions of dollars of uninsured art work that was lost in the blaze. The structure also contained three expensive autos in the garage in the lower level which were saved after an excavator that the structures owner had stored on site was placed into service to make a trench cut in the roof.... This trench cut was successful in stopping the fires progression but unfortunately most of the structure was already lost.. Over thirty pieces of apparatus from 12-plus departments from N.Y. and Connecticut battled the blaze. Rich passed away while trying to help at an auto accident that he came upon on the Taconic Parkway in the East Fishkill Fire District on January 10, 2009 as he was on his way home after completing his 24 hr shift as the Medic on Town of Wappinger Medic #2. Numerous Emergency Service Agencies participated in the service for Rich who touched, and even in some cases saved the lives of so many people and he will never be forgotten....... Auto Accident -Rte 376 north of DC Airport - New Hackensack Fire District : The New Hackensack Fire Department along with Town of Wappinger Ambulance/TransCare Medics were dispatched for a single car auto accident with entrapment on Route 376 north of the Dutchess County Airport at approximately 3:00 am on Saturday June 2nd. There initially were conflicting reports of how many patients but all callers indicated that extrication was required. First arriving units found a late model Honda Accord into a tree with only one patient the driver, a middle aged female pinned in the vehicle. The vehicle appeared to have been traveling south on Rte 376 and left the roadway sliding sideways striking a tree at the passenger side front door. The force of the impact caused the tree to almost completely occupy the front passenger seat area. The driver appeared to have significant internal injuries and was treated by Town of Wappinger/TransCare Medics as New Hackensack Firefighters performed the extrication. The extrication was completed in approximately fifteen minutes at which point the patient was transported by Town of Wappinger/TransCare ambulance to the St. Francis Hospital Trauma Center for treatment of her injuries. The accident investigation was handled by the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office.

Pedestrian struck by automobile - Pye Lane - New Hackensack FD, Town of Wappinger / TransCare Medics, D.C.S.O., N.Y.S.P. : The New Hackensack FD, Town of Wappinger - TransCare Medics, The Dutchess County Sheriffs Office, and the New York State Police responded for two people struck by an automobile on Pye Lane in the Town of Wappinger on the evening of December 28. Units arrived within several minutes and found an adult male with severe trauma and a female that was physically uninjured after being struck by an automobile which then fled the scene. TransCare and NKFD personnel worked to stabilize the severely injured male as the PD units on the scene began their investigation of the incident. The male was transported to St Francis Trauma Center and then later to Westchester Medical Center. My prayers go out to the victim and his family who have experienced way too much tragedy lately.......

Structure Fire - Grant Street - City of Poughkeepsie Fd w/ MA from the Arlington and Fairview FD's : The Arlington and Fairview Fire Departments responded under mutual-aid to the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department for a possible structure fire on Grant Street in the city on the evening Of November 28th. The cities equipment was tied up at another alarm with smoke in an apartment building and as Arlington and Fairview were in route, DC 911 received another call reporting smoke in the area. Arlington and Fairview arrived within several minutes and found an active fire on the first floor of a 20 x 40 2-story wood framed dwelling..... AFD and Fairview went to work and quickly extinguished the fire. The house was vacant and unfurnished which helped limit the fires spread and thus reduced the damage to the structure. The City of Poughkeepsie Police and Fire Departments are investigating the incident.

Auto Accident - New Hackensack RD I/F/O the R&R Deli - New Hackensack Fire District, Transcare/Town Of Wappinger Medics, NYSD and the DCSO. 9/28/08 : On Sunday morning September 28, the Dutchess County 911 Center dispatched the New Hackensack Fire Department, Town of Wappinger/Transcare Medics, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, and the N.Y.S.P. for a reported auto accident with injuries on New Hackensack Rd. in front of the R&R Deli. Upon the arrival of responding units, it was determined that there was one injury which was the result of a one vehicle roll-over accident. The female driver suffered a head injury after her vehicle left the rain slicked roadway, rode up an embankment, and rolled back down onto the roadway landing upright. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and removed the drivers door and roof as T.O.W./Transcare Medics stabilized the patient. Once the door and roof were removed, the female driver was transported to St Francis Trauma Center for treatment of her injuries.

4 Million Gallon Diesel Fuel Tank Fire 9/5/07 - City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department : At 11:20 hrs on Wednesday September 5,2007 the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department was dispatched for a reported tank fire at the Love-Effron fuel tank farm located on Pine St. along the banks Hudson River. First arriving Poughkeepsie units found a 4 million gallon fuel oil tank with fire venting from its top and with structural distension to the tank. They were advised by site workers that the tanks total capacity was 4 million gallons and the tanks current level was at approximately 3.5 million gallons. As firefighters began to get setup to fight the fire, protect the remaining uninvolved tanks, and establish a water supply from the nearby Hudson river, the fire mysteriously appeared to have extinguished itself. Although this was definitely the lucky break the Firefighters needed, the situation was far from being safe. Initially there were too many unanswered questions such as was the fire really out? Would it reignite? The tank had obviously suffered structural damage and was this damage enough to cause the tank to suffer a catastrophic collapse? And if the tank did collapse, where would the contents go? Would the brim handle the release or would it be violent enough that it would shower the contents into the near-by Hudson River? Without answers to the prior questions, Poughkepsies incident command began requesting the necessary resources to both get the answers as well as to handle all of these situations if they were to occur. Command requested that all off-duty Poughkeepsie Firefighters be recalled and requested M/A from numerous area departments and agencies. Crash trucks from the Dutchess County Airport as well as the Stewart Airport Air National Guard were requested to the scene as well as the US Coast Guard, DCSO Marine Patrol, and the NYSP Aviation Unit. In talking with someone today that is familiar with the tanks construction, the tank's built in fire suppression put the fire out. Apparently there is a "floating dome" that rides on the surface of the tanks contents. When the explosion occurred, this dome may have lifted during the initial blast but came back down on top of the tanks liquid contents effectively smothering the fire..... Kind of like putting a lid on pan with a grease fire on the stove (My analogy). The tanks contents reportedly were moved to other tanks at the facility.

Structure Fire - 29 Conklin St. - City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department 9/08/2008 : City of Poughkeepsie firefighters responded for a reported structure fire at #29 Conklin St off the west-bound arterial on the evening of September 8th. First-in companies found a heavy fire conditions in a a two-story wood frame dwelling with exposure problems. Via an aggressive interior attack, firefighters made a quick knockdown before the exposures became part of their problem however not before they had suffered some radiant heat damage. The structure was vacant at the time of the fire which was investigated by both the City of Poughkeepsie police and fire departments and was deemed of suspicious origin. As with many municipalities today, the operating budgets are getting tighter and Poughkeepsie is no different. There has been some talk recently of possibly taking one of Poughkeepsie's two ladder trucks out of service as a cost saving measure for the city. Both the City of Poughkeepsie mayor and comptroller responded to this fire and discussed the incident with Chief Ken Boyd and one can only assume they discussed the importance of having both ladders in service. In this particular incident, if the fire had spread to the adjoining structures, not having two ladders on the scene ready to go to work could have made a significant difference in the outcome.

Another run with Hyattsville - Smoke in the Metro Station 7/24/08 : This is another run I took in with Hyattsville around 6:00 am on July 24,2008. They were dispatched along with numerous other Prince George's County units for smoke in the West Hyattsville Metro station. This didn't start out as a good incident for me as one of my lenses slipped out of my camera bag and smashed onto the ground as as I stepped off Hyattsville's Truck. I kneeled down on the ground, stared at it briefly, picked it up and put it back in my bag properly, and moved on....... There wasn't a lot of info to be had as to what the actual situation was when we arrived and one crew went to interview the Station Master as the others went to the platforms to investigate. It was eventually determined that the call was prompted by a small fire on the third rail just outside the station. This was handled by the Metro personnel and all PG unit's took up..... The first in wagon hit the standpipe as soon as they arrived before they even knew what they had. I was on several other calls one of which was food on the stove, and the first in wagon also laid in on this as well..... Their SOP is to establish a water supply immediately as crews are determining what you have..... I have to say I like this type of thinking although in my departments area, it's a little impractical to operate like this.....But with a fully hydranted response area, and hydrants always in close proximity, it definitely works for them.. As far as my lens goes, It figures it was the most expensive one I own but it seems to be OK ...... I got lucky as the impact was absorbed by my lens shade and cap.......

119th Annual Hudson Valley Volunteer Fireman's Association (HVVFA) Convention Parade hosted by the Ellenville Fire Department - Saturday June 21, 2008 : Here are some 500-plus photo's of the entire parade representing all units that participated. It was a well planned, executed , and attended event and I applaud all those involved in making the event the success that it was. The weather was outstanding although the bright sunshine was a challenge from a photography standpoint...... Structure Fire - City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department - #385 Mansion St. 10/24/07 : The City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department (Dutchess Cnty. N.Y.) was dispatched early this A.M. for a reported structure fire at #385 Mansion St. First arriving PFD units found heavy fire conditions on the second floor of a 2 story, wood frame, multiple family dwelling. A 10-75 was immediately transmitted which brings in a mutual-aid F.A.S.T. team and a short time later, a second alarm was sounded which recalls all off-duty personnel and mans a reserve engine. As firefighters fought the blaze, it became apparent that this would be a long term operation at which point, a third alarm was sounded which fills the empty city fire stations with mutual-aid companies. At one point during the incident, evacuation orders were given when the fire conditions suddenly deteriorated. Firefighters were soon back in the building and at this point, made quick work of extinguishing the fire. PFD was assisted at the scene by the Fairview Fire Dept. with their F.A.S.T. team who were eventually put to work as well as the Arlington Fire Dept. with their F.A.S.T. team. The Arlington, Highland (Ulster Cnty), and Roosevelt Fire Departments provided coverage in the PFD fire stations during the incident. I got there fairly quickly considering the drive I had...... I was surprised to see they had it knocked down when I arrived........ I figured that I got myself out of bed at 4:15 AM and drove all the way up there so I'm not going to make this a wasted effort.... So I figured I might as well get some practice shots in so when I do finally get some fire, I'll be better prepaired...... Here they are...... I hope you enjoy them.... Bill Ps..... These shots were all taken "hand-held" with a Canon 5D, a Canon 17-40L Lens, and a Metz 76 Mz-5 Flash......

Auto Accident - City of Beacon Fire Department - Newburgh-Beacon Bridge Toll Plaza - July 1985 - From my archives : These photo's were taken in July of 1985 and are of an auto accident that occurred on Interstate 84 at the toll plaza of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in the City of Beacon N.Y. I was awakened at approximately 1:00 am on a warm July morning by a phone call from the New York State Police requesting that I respond with my photography equipment to a serious accident at the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge toll plaza. When I arrived at the scene, I could not believe what I saw....... A tractor-trailer had driven over a car containing I believe five young women completely destroying their car and leaving them all heavily entangled in what was left of their vehicle. I was greeted by several troopers all of who asked me to document the scene and offered to help me in any way I needed. I also had help from the City of Beacon Fire Department and Chief Steve VanBuren who allowed me to get into some elevated positions to get some unique images. The City of Beacon Fire Department operated with the assistance of the Chelsea and Rombout Fire Departments and the EMS was handled by the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps with assistance from Sloper-Willen and Mobile Life Support Ambulance. These are some of the photo's that I took of the incident and are digital scans from slides...... I believe all the woman were released from the hospital within several days after the incident - An incredible accident with an equally incredible outcome........ If anybody has any more details they would like to add or correct, please let me know..... Thanks....Bill

Auto Accident - Rte 376 - 3/31/05 - NKFD : The driver and her female passenger were pinned in the wreckage of their VW Golf when they were struck by an oncoming vehicle that reportedly swerved to avoid a deer on Rte 376 in the Town of Wappinger near the East Fishkill line. New Hackensack firefighters worked for approximately 20 minutes to extricate both occupants while Town of Wappinger Paramedics assessed their injuries and provided medical treatment.Both victims were transported by ground to St Francis Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was ambulatory and apparently only suffered minor injuries.

When the bodies of three young children were removed from the burning structure by interior search crews, it became became apparent that this was more than just 3 kids being overcome by smoke inhilation. According to Police reports, 5 persons including 3 innocent kids were murdered in the house and the house was set on fire as a cover-up. I have to credit Rombout Chief John Lucariello and all the firefighters on the scene for handling the situation in a professional and non chaotic manner. Car into Fishkill Creek - Rombout Fire District : Rombout FD was dispatched for a vehicle into the Fishkill Creek at Route 52 and Hustis Lane in the Town of Fishkill at aproximately 5:30 am on May 28th. Upon the arrival of Chief John Lucariello, he requested the Hughsonville FD be dispatched with their dive team to assist. Rombout firefighters in wet suits and Hughsonville dive team members searched the vehicle and surrounding waters and found no occupants..... The owners reportedly arrived at the scene a short time later claiming their Honda CRV was stolen. Apparently it was stolen then intentionally dumped into the creek..... The Town of Fishkill Police are investigating.......

Truck Fire - 9/4/2004 - Orchard Drive - Town of Wappinger - New Hackensack Fire District : These are photo's of a truck fire that occured back on September 4th, 2004...... I never did anything with them and I figured I would put them up....Finally! The fire occured on Orchard Drive in the Town of Wappinger and the Ford pick-ups engine compartment was fully involved under power lines upon NKFD's arrival.... This fire tested the patience of the firefighters as they fought with the hood and just as it seemed as the fire was knocked down, it would flare back up with more vigor....... The final solution was the application of foam......

6+ Alarm Structure Fire - Hudson River Psychiatric Center - Fairview Fire District : Numerous photos of a fire that occurred Hudson River Psychiatric Center located in the Town of Poughkeepsie N.Y. - Fairview Fire District. The fire began around 7:00 P.M. on May 31, 2007 and crews remained on the scene for days wetting down hot spots and picking up hose. The official cause has been determined to be from a lightning strike from a severe storm that passed through the area just prior to the fires discovery. The Hudson River Psychiatric Center or as it was commonly referred to "HRPC" is a huge complex of buildings that dates back to 1867 and was used to house and treat the states mentally ill until the state began closing the facility I believe in the late 80's. The site had so many huge buildings that they had their own fully staffed fire department to provide fire protection for the property and the hospitals occupants. Twenty-six buildings on the former hospital grounds have been listed as "historically significant properties" and the site was sold to a developer in 2005 for redevelopment. Here is a link to a site with the history of the HRPC : http://www.historic51.org/ By FDNY standards (1 alarm = 2 engines and a truck), this was the equivalent of a 6+ Alarm fire and it is the first incident that I have ever been to that 6 elevated master streams were in operation at once and when I left some 7-1/2 hrs later, I could see flames in my rearview mirror as I left the scene. The firefighters were faced with significant challenges upon their arrival. First was the sheer size of the building(s) involved, secondly was that the buildings were attached to each other making for a huge exposure problem as well as a maze to navigate (It took me 20 minutes to walk from the front to the rear of the fire building), and lastly was that the sites hydrant system was taken out of service. With no functioning hydrant system, firefighters were forced to lay several miles of large diameter 5" hose to supply the needed water to battle the fire. This fire proved the value of a properly implemented incident command system as well as the efficiency of Dutchess Counties 911 Dispatch Center. This was most likely one of the largest mutual-aid incidents in Dutchess County history with departments from most of Dutchess County as well numerous units from Ulster as well and I think pretty much everything went without a hitch with relatively little chaos.....

Structure Fire - President Franklin Delano Roosevelt Home - Hyde Park Fire District 1/23/82 - From my archives : MORE PHOTO'S TO BE ADDED!!!!! These are probably photo's of the most famous subject matter that I'll ever do and they are scans from color negatives......As far as I know, these are the only photo's in existence that were taken while the fire was still burning...... At least that what I have been told by the National Park Service....The fire occurred just after midnight on January 23rd,1982 at the Hyde Park , N.Y. home of the late President Franklin Roosevelt . Prior to this fire, numerous area fire companies including the Hyde Park Fire Department who cover the FDR historical site, were operating in the below zero temperatures at a large structure fire in the Staatsburg Fire District in the town of Hyde Park. The initial dispatch was for a "routine" automatic fire alarm which Hyde Park had answered numerous times at the home in the past and all were malfunctions.... This time though..... Things were going to be different..... The first units on the scene arrived to find heavy fire from the roof of the home of the thirty-second President of the United States and a national historic treasure. The first due equipment to the scene were Hyde Parks reserve engine and a ladder truck from the Hudson River Psychiatric Center in the Town of Poughkeepsie. By the time the incident was over, 10 area departments were called to the scene and significant fire, smoke, and water damage had occurred to the structure. The fires cause was attributed to an electrical malfunction on the third floor of the home where renovations were in progress at the time of the fire. Through the efforts of all the firefighters who responded to the scene, as well as the efforts of the National Park Service personnel, I don't believe anything irreplaceable was lost in the fire and the building was eventually repaired to it's original stature.... These photo's were on display in the Library of Congress for three months as part of a display the National Park Service had done showing the fire, the damage done, and the repairs that were made to the building. They were also featured in several magazines including Firehouse and also a book about the history of FDR.

Possible person in the water - Vassar Lake IAO Vassar College Townhouses - Arlington Fire District 12/9/07 : AFD was dispatched for a possible person in the water in Vassar Lake I/A/O the Vassar College Townhouses after reports were received of a woman screaming followed by a loud splash in the water at that location........ With little info to go on other than the initial reports, AFD, The DCSO Dive Team, The Hughsonville FD Dive Team, and the Town of Poughkeepsie Police searched the shoreline and water and found no evidence of anything unusual other than a large group of geese on the lake that may have explained the splash element of the report as they frequently did so while the search was in progress.......

Auto Accident w/ pole & wires down - All Angels Hill Rd. south of Myers Corners 10/12/07 - New Hackensack Fire District : At approximately 4:20pm on October 12, 2007 the New Hackensack Fire Department and Town of Wappinger Ambulance were dispatched for an auto accident with a reported pole and wires down on All Angels Hill Rd. south of Myers Corners Rd. Upon their arrival, responding units found a one car accident with a pole and wires down which were completely blocking the roadway. The driver and his passengers were uninjured the car however, didn't fair so well..... Central Hudson responded to the scene and accessed the situation and began making repairs as NKFD personnel set up barricades to secure the roadway for a long term closure. All Angels Hill Rd. remained closed until the repairs were completed at 11:40 pm....

Auto Accident - Diddell Road IAO Daniel Sabia Drive - New Hackensack Fire District. The vehicle had two occupants.... The driver and her pit bull.... : On October 11, 2007 at 23:44 hrs, Dutchess County N.Y. 911 Center dispatched the New Hackensack Fire Department, Town of Wappinger Ambulance, and the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office for a reported roll-over auto accident with an unconscious person on Diddell Road I/A/O Daniel Sabia Dive. The DCSO arrived a short time later and advised DC 911 that there was one patient who was conscious but experiencing severe neck and back pain. NKFD firefighters assisted TOW/Trans-Care in immobilizing/packaging the adult female driver and she was quickly transported to St Francis Hospital for treatment of her injuries. It was reported that the driver swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway and lost control of her vehicle which came to rest atop an embankment on the shoulder of the road. The driver tried to escape the vehicle and at this point it slid back down the embankment onto the roadway further injurng the the driver. There was also a second passenger in the vehicle and that was the womans pit bull terrier. The dog appeared to be uninjured and fortunately did not interfere with patient care but did wander around the accident scene in a slightly agitated and obviously confused manner but at no time posed a threat to personnel. Numerous reluctant attempts were made to restrain the dog but were all unsuccessful. The dog eventually fled into the woods and it's present fate is unknown.

Auto Accident with entrapment. Rte 9 I/A/O Guardian Self Storage - Hughsonville Fire District : On Tuesday September 4,2007 at 10:20 hrs, The Hughsonvillie Fire Department, New Hackensack's Rescue 52-55 under M/A (HFD's Rescue is O.O.S as the equipment from the same being fitted onto their new Rescue at the factory) and Town of Wappinger Ambulance / Transcare were dispatched to a reported auto accident on Rte 9 I/A/O the Guardian Self Storage. First arriving units found a two car accident with entrapment in the south bound lane of Rt 9 at the entrance to the Lawrence Farms Plaza. Town of Wapinger Ambulance personnel began to treat an adult female who was trapped in her late model sedan after it came to a rest on its side as a result of the collision.

Structure Fire - 10/18/2004 - 53 Field Stone Loop - Town of Wappinger - New Hackensack Fire District : More photo's that were collecting electrons on my hard drive.... I finally put these up too.... New Hackensack Fire and Town of Wappinger Ambulance were dispatched at approximately 10:30pm on October 18, 2004 for a reported structure fire at #53 Field Stone Loop. Arriving units found a heavy fire condition on the second floor or a 2-story wood frame town house with a similar attached occupancy as an exposure. The fire was quickly knocked down with a 1-3/4" line w/ a solid bore nozzle and the exposure was checked for extension. The occupants were alerted by a sounding smoke detector and escaped without injury. The structure received heavy fire damage to the second floor and smoke and water damage to the remainder of the structure. The attached exposure was unscathed. The Hughsonville FD assisted at the scene.

Auto Accident - Reported car fire with persons trapped - Route 9 I.A.O. Poughkeepsie Plaza - Arlington Fire District : Town of Poughkeepsie N.Y. - At 12:39 am on Saturday July 21, 2007, the Arlington Fire Department was dispatched for an auto accident with a car on fire and persons trapped on Route 9 in the area of the Poughkeepsie Plaza. During their response, responding Arlington units were advised by Dutchess County 911 that additional callers confirm that there was one person trapped and the car was on fire. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police arrived a short time later and advised Dutchess County 911 the driver of the vehicle was now out, and the vehicle was upside-down and on fire in the parking lot of the Poughkeepsie Plaza. Upon Arlington's arrival, they extinguished a small fire and their Medics evaluated the driver who appeared uninjured. Apparently the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Route 9 and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway hitting traffic signs, a pedestrian control device, and a tree which was sheared off at its base before coming to a rest upside-down in the plaza lot. The force of the multiple impacts did major damage to the vehicle which resulted in the fire and caused the vehicle to leak fluids. After the fire was extinguished and driver was treated, Firefighters continued to work to secure the vehicle and absorb spilled fluids from the pavement. The accident was investigated by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department.

Structure Fire - Marlyn Drive - Town of Wappinger - New Hackensack Fire District : Town of Wappinger, N.Y - At approximately 12:30 am on Saturday July 7th, 2007, the Dutchess County N.Y. 911 center began receiving simultaneous reports of a structure fire on Marlyn Drive in the Town of Wappinger. The New Hackensack Fire Department was dispatched along with Town of Wappinger Ambulance / Transcare for a confirmed structure fire at #4 Marlyn Drive. New Hackensack Asst. Chief Frank Paulo (52-3) arrived minutes later finding a 2-story raised ranch fully involved and already beginning to collapse. The only occupant of the residence, an 81 year old woman was alerted by a smoke detector and initially escaped the building. She then reportedly went back into the structure to remove her car from the garage parking the same 5 feet from the structure and left the garage door open. She then went back into the structure and was removed by a neighbor who had been awakened by popping noises and had gone over to the residence to investigate. Some time after this point, the fire was reported which gave it a significant head start and left firefighters with an impossible challenge. Asst Chief Rocco DiMase (52-2) assumed command and requested mutual-aid from the East Fishkill Fire Department with their F.A.S.T. team, the Hughsonville Fire Department with an engine,tanker, and manpower as well as the Chelsea and Glenham Fire Departments with tankers. A tanker shuttle was set up to supplement the poorly performing hydrants in the area. The New Hamburg and Rombout Fire Departments provided station coverage during the incident. In addition to the structure, the womans car was also destroyed by the fire which is not believed to be of suspicious origin and is being investigated by the Dutchess County Office of Emergency Response Cause and Origin Team and the Dutchess County Sheriffs Office.

Structure Fire - Park Condominiums - Village of Fishkill Fire Department : Fishkill N.Y. - The Village of Fishkill Fire Department with the assistance of numerous mutual aid companies battled a fast-moving fire at the Park Condominiums located off Loudon Drive in the village. The Dutchess County 911 center began receiving multiple calls for a fire in building 25 of the complex at approximately 2:30 am on the morning of June 25, 2007. The Village of Fishkill Fire Department was subsequently dispatched along with the East Fishkill Fire Department with their F.A.S.T. team. First arriving units arrived to find a heavy volume of fire on the second floor of building 25 that had already broken through the roof. Chief Dean Scofield assumed command and immediately requested mutual aid from the Beacon, Chelsea, Glenham, Hughsonville, and Rombout fire departments. An initial primary search was attempted but unsuccessful due to the volume of fire. The occupants were originally unaccounted for but were later found uninjured and among the crowd of spectators. Numerous lines were placed into operation and firefighters began their aggressive interior attack on the fire making numerous openings in the ceilings to get at the fire above. The fire was quickly knocked down by the Village of Fishkill with the assistance of their mutual-aid companies and overhaul operations were initiated. The Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division was then requested to investigate the cause of the fire which is unknown at this time.

Auto Accident - Car upside down into Creek - Widmer Rd near All Angels Hill Rd. - New Hackensack Fire District : Town of Wappinger, N.Y. - On Saturday evening June 2nd at approximately 11:15 pm, the New Hackensack Fire Department and Town of Wappinger Ambulance/Transcare were dispatched for a reported auto accident with a vehicle off the roadway and upside down in a creek on Widmer Rd, just in from All Angels Hill Rd. First arriving units found a Subaru Legacy upside down in the shallow creek bed and the adult male driver who was the only occupant, was found standing near his vehicle. He appeared uninjured and had self extricated himself from the vehicle. Unable to make his way to the roadway due to the terrain and other factors, FD personnel lowered a roof ladder off the bridge and descended the 10 foot drop down into the creek bed and assisted the driver up to the roadway where he was evaluated by EMS personnel. The driver refused medical attention and was subsequently taken into custody by the Dutchess County Sheriffs Department for DWI. It appeared that the driver failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway, contacting and riding a guardrail which caused the car to become airborne and then finally landing upside down in the shallow creek bed 10 feet below. New Hackensack Fire personnel worked for approximately an hour recovering spilled vehicle fluids that had entered the water and stood by while the vehicle was removed from the creek bed. Ironically there was another accident at the same location a week ago. In this accident, a new Ford pick up truck struck a tree and was destroyed. The driver in this accident was also uninjured and arrested for DWI.

Town of Wappinger Memorial Day Service / Wm T. Parsons Memorial Service - May 28th 2007 : On Memorial Day under bright blue skies, the members of the New Hackensack Fire Department assisted the Town of Wappinger in this years Memorial Day service held at the towns Schlathaus Park located at the intersection of Myers Corners Rd. and All Angels Hill Rd in the Town of Wappinger. The New Hackensack Fire Company has helped with this service numerous times is the past, but this years service was special because it was an opportunity not only to honor those who have fought to defend our freedom, but to also pay tribute to the late Bill Parsons, who was founding member of the New Hackesack Fire Department and a highly decorated WWII GI who passed away on May 12th. Bill was a longtime New Hackensack Fire Commissioner and for many of those years he served as Chairman. He was an active member of the department and was proud of both its history and accomplishments. He was also proud of the men and women who have fought to defend our country and designed and commissioned a War Memorial in the Schlathaus park in their honor. There was a ceremony raise the flag over the monument that Bill's widow Helen, was presented at his funeral service. The East Fishkill and Roosevelt Fire Departments also assisted in the services.

Structure Fire - 16 Pine Tree Drive - Arlington Fire District : Great Job by AFD......Arlington was dispatched in the early morning hours of May 14th for a structure fire at #16 Pine Tree Drive. Arriving units encountered a heavy volume of fire from the rear of the structure on the #1 and 2 floors. An agressive interior attack was initiated and a quick knockdown was the result. Unfortunately for me, they did such a good job I was only able to get there for overhaul :)... The fire appeared to have started in the rear of the structure and is rumored to have been caused by a wood stove...... The owners of the newly remodeled residence were able to escape w/o injury.... New Hamburg FD was on the scene with their Fast Team.....

Structure Fire - Hillcrest Court - New Hackensack Fire District : New Hackensack was dispatched for a reported structure fire on Hillcrest Court off Pye Lane in the Town of Wappinger during the early morning hours of October 30,2005. Minutes later, Chief Mike Valentino arrived and found the ~1 year old 2800 sq ft house fully involved. An attack with master streams was initiated and the fire was knocked down quickly however not before the fire almost completely destroyed the house. The damage to the house was so severe, that it was unsafe to do any interior operations. New Hamburg was called in with their aerial tower 53-45 to assist with overhaul and taking care of inaccessible hot spots..... The fire apparently started in Halloween decorations set up on the front porch of the home. The fire rapidly traveled the outside exterior of the front of the house and then entered the attic and second story of the home. The occupants awoke hearing strange noises and narrowly escaped the fast spreading fire.

Auto Accident 5/13/05 - #17 Sherwood Heights - NKFD : This early morning accident occured when an intoxicated male left a party at a nearby house.... As he was leaving the house, he lost his bearing, drove across a few lawns, went off a ~4 foot drop off, and drove over two Corvett sports cars and a Cadilac .......
